New releases of special-edition vehicles, unique factory options and specialty trim packages are always exciting when it comes to some of the Big Three’s top performance cars. Not only do new options mean more individuality without hefty customization costs, but more often than not, increased sales and appeal for the offered brands.
But with SRT’s recent move to introduce Satin Vapor Edition cars, we can’t help but wonder: Is this really going to keep Mopar alive and well? Or will it take more than just some satin accessories to keep the Dodge and Chrysler brands at the top of the food chain?
Back in the classic Mopar years, there were plenty of unique aesthetic options, including color schemes like Plum Crazy, HEMI Orange and Sublime. But while brightly colored features are still part of the new Mopar lineup, more and more satin paint schemes and accessories seem to be the go-to for the Pentastar group of brands.
Nothing proves this more than the recent release of the Satin Vapor Edition cars from performance sub-brand SRT. According to SRT’s website, the Satin Vapor Edition packages are meant to bring a formal air to three existing high-performance cars, including the 2014 Dodge Charger, Challenger and the Chrysler 300.
To make them Satin Vapor models, each car is equipped with a variety of satin finished accessories, such as 20-inch 5-spoke Black Satin Vapor wheels, Satin Black side mirrors, black taillight housings, a Satin Black rear decklid spoiler, and even a Satin Black hood treatment and matching roof treatment. Black premium interior is also included on the Satin Vapor Edition cars, as well as red brake calipers.
A black body stripe can also be added to the 300 to top off the Satin package, while the Charger and Challenger both get Satin Black fuel doors to top off their appearances.
Okay, satin paint schemes can look cool if they’re done right, but is this really the direction that we want our premiere Mopars to go these days?
Yes, the new package certainly makes your vehicle stand out, but wouldn’t you rather have it stand out with better performance rather than a less shiny accessory package? While the Blue Oval and the Bow Tie brands are making power and performance packages, are fancy colors going to be enough? You tell us!
