Video: One Of The Slowest Laps In Autocrossing That You’ll Ever See

What do you get when you mix autocrossing with the burnout? You get one of the slowest laps around a set of cones that you’ll ever see. The course is set up in Venhuizen, a small township in North Holland. Take a pristine 1970 Dodge Charger R/T, lay out some cones, gather a huge crowd, and lay down enough rubber to complete a lap. It probably sounds pretty easy, but then, it’s really not that simple.

Most of the time, when you see someone participating in a burnout contest, it’s much easier: a bunch of water is sprayed down to get things started, and many times there are provisions put in place that almost guarantees you’ll perform the burnout of your lifetime – or break something in the process. We’ve seen cars chained down, wheel chocks put in place, and even a barrier – all to keep the car from going forward.

Burnouts on the open road, however, give the car owner a straight shot to see if they can lay down some pretty impressive patches, and just how far they can do it. But put out a set of cones, and the challenge gets a little tougher. Not only do you have to keep the right amount of brake pressure to get you going, but you also have to make sure that you can navigate around the cones and complete a lap without coloring outside of the lines with your rear tires.

Unfortunately, even the most experienced driver can have a bad day. Yep, he hit the wall.

The Charger R/T you see in the video above does just that: he makes his way around the track, never letting up until a complete lap takes place. This makes for one of the slowest laps in autocrossing that you’ll ever see. Sadly, though, even when you can pull off a stunt like this, sometimes it doesn’t work out so well. Like the song says, “you’ve got to know when to hold ’em, and know when to fold ’em“, and as you can see in the video below, even an experienced doctor of meltthehidesology can get into a bit of a pickle. One word: ouch!
