What would you pay for a 1962 Ford Falcon sporting an Indy Car Engine? A rare find on Ebay with the current bid at $99,000, the Indy car engine designed in ’65 by Ford, ran for many years at the Indy Brickyard. Ford Motor Company set out with the mission to launch the Ford Indianapolis racing project with a goal to enhance their image in the performance market. The overall objective to build a race engine of 255 CID, producing on the low end 325 hp, with a maximum weight of 350lbs.
After years of success, the operation was sold to A.J. Foyt and eventually landed in the hands of builder Ken Thompson. Building for Holman Moody Racing, and growing up on the Nascar circuit, Thompson developed an amazing skill for fabrication. With NASCAR as his vision he set out to build the ultimate high performance car on or off the track. Every component crafted specifically for this ride, Thompson left no corner or crevice untouched.
With the extremely rare 1965 ford 4-cam Indy Car motor dropped in, and the unique positioning of the intake manifold between the Ford Indy turbo camshafts, and the exhaust designed to exit to the inside of the DOHC Ford Indy cylinder heads this layout goes against all traditional designs. The small block, backed by a Tremec TKO-600 5 speed transmission is nothing less than a masterpiece created by the skilled hand of a craftsman.
Continuing with custom stainless steel exhaust runners that snake their way forward, they merge into an 8-1 collector bolted onto a Turbinetics GTK 1000 turbo, further enhancing the beastly performance. Brake system includes Alcon 13” discs with 6-piston calipers, front and rear braided lines, and twin Wilwood master cylinders with a balance bar. With this unique set up the builder reports the ride is capable of 11,000+rpm and 250mph.
Moving into the interior the car was stripped down to the bones. With only the necessities left – consisting of the gauges, steering wheel, seats, dash, start switches, a custom built roll cage, and the shifter. Built with very basic comfort, this ride is ready to perform on or off track.
Finishing off the outer appearance, the black exterior accented with a chrome grill and gold rims displays a mean sleeper stance, sparking interest in this beastly beauty. So who’s ready to take this puppy out for a spin around, I don’t know… Daytona?
