It seems like the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat has been the talk of the town with muscle car enthusiasts everywhere. Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah is lucky enough to score the keys to test one out for himself, but in Portland where it rains quite a bit.
At International Portland Raceway, Matt takes the Challenger Hellcat and all of its 707 horses (and 650 lb-ft of torque) out for some fun in the pouring rain, which is a bit scary with that much power under the gas and a six-speed manual transmission. Matt takes it on the road course and it performs well even in turns, just maybe not so much in those hairpins. Getting sideways is fun, and on Sport Mode with traction-control, the car likes to try to correct itself when slipping sideways.
With a 2.4-liter roots blower atop that 6.2-liter V8 engine, the Hellcat is making more power than Ford’s beloved Shelby GT500 rated at 662 hp. However, weight ratio is something to talk about. The new Challenger Hellcat tips the scales at 4,439 lbs. which honestly is hefty for a sports car.
With 700+ hp under the gas, stopping power is important. With six-piston 15-inch Brembo brakes in the front, it really isn’t a worry. Also installed on the Hellcat is the SRT suspension for handling, as well as a beefier rear.
According to Matt, the ’15 Challenger Hellcat is a solid performer, even on the wet pavement. For anyone looking to own some pure-bred American muscle for an about $60,000, this could be a good bang for the buck.
