Fort Collins Residents Celebrate Cinco De Mayo With Family Car Show

For thousands of people, the beginning of May not only signifies the beginning of summer but also time to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. Though May 5th landed on a Monday this year, cities all across the country celebrated with events, good food, great music and tons of family fun. For Fort Collins, Colorado, the weekend was filled with everything you could expect from a robust celebration, including Sunday’s Cinco De Mayo Car Show at Northside Aztlan Community Gym. Check out some of the gorgeous rides we ran across while there.

Often mistaken as Mexico’s day of independence, Cinco De Mayo is actually a celebration of thanks to Mexico for helping defeat French forces in the Civil War. Celebrated on and named for the fifth of May, Cinco De Mayo signifies the anniversary of the Mexican Army’s unlikely defeat of French forces on May 5th, 1862 during the Battle of Puebla. Some 152 years later, the celebration continues.

In Fort Collins, Colorado, locals and guests celebrated Cinco De Mayo 2014 with a large festival in Old Town, featuring live music, amazing Spanish food and of course, a car show filled with traditional lowriders, pinstriped hot rods, and custom lowrider bicycles. In the name of family fun, carnival rides, games, and tons of food venders were also on hand.

With automotive examples from the mean to the extreme on the Northside Aztlan Community Gym grounds, we couldn’t help but be drawn into the local celebration of Mexican culture.

Much different than what you see at a hot rod cruise-in or show, every vehicle on display was decked to the nines in a display of personalities like no other.

Much like old hot rod shows, we also found many of the custom creations lined with mirrors, sitting atop glitter or accented with props for not only eye-catching purposes, but to show off each car owner’s individual style and pride in their ride.

With just about 50 cars on display, the show was a small one in comparison to some of the national shows, but certainly well worth the time spent taking in all the sites and sounds. Check out more of our favorite rides from the show in the GALLERY below!
