12-Mile 1993 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra Sells For $204,000

A 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra with only 12 miles on its odometer just  sold for $204,000 on Bring A Trailer.

This Teal Metallic Fox body is essentially a brand-new car from a different era, right down to the original protective plastic still covering the seats and carpet. The Cobra and the F150 Lightning were the first two vehicles to emerge from Ford’s newly created Special Vehicle Team, which was created to develop specialty versions of mainstream products. Its mission statement was Performance, Substance, Exclusivity  and Value.

The story goes that the original owner bought this Cobra from Beach Ford in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and put it away almost immediately. A selling dealer in Arizona recently acquired the car, uncovering an optional leather interior still wrapped in factory protective film.

The well-optioned cabin features Opal Grey leather sports seats with power lumbar support, a split-folding rear bench, air conditioning, and a factory AM-FM stereo with CD player, the latter or which added a hefty $629 extra to the price.

The driver faces a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a full set of gauges, including a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,900 rpm redline. An adjustable steering column was not an option on the Mustang from 1990-1993, giving this driver’s car a peculiar driving position.

The selling dealer recently serviced the car in March 2025, replacing the fuel pump and servicing the air conditioning system.

The Special Vehicle Team really went through the ancient Fox body to make it more modern performer, one meant to compete with the all-new Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebirds, which also debuted in 1993. The engine, suspension and body were all touched.

What really made the ’93 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra special at the time was the work SVT, under the leadership of Janine Bay, did to the 5.0-liter V8. They added high-performance GT-40 cast-iron cylinder heads, a Cobra-specific variant of the GT-40 intake manifold with 24 lb-hr fuel injectors, a different camshaft, and a bigger throttle body.

Different pulleys were also used to free up power, and a larger 70mm mass air meter was added. The end result was an underrated 235 horsepower system 4,600 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 revs. These engines really liked to rev, so the 4,600 rpm rating was under-selling things. Actual output was easily 270 net horsepower. This allowed the Mustang to run 13-second quarter-mile times, making it the first stock Mustang capable of that feat since the 1971 Boss 351.

The drivetrain consists of a BorgWarner T-5 five-speed manual with phosphate-coated gears and a Traction-Lok limited-slip rear axle with 3.08 gears.

The exterior is accented with fog lights and polished dual exhaust tips, and the car sits on its original 17-inch turbine-style aluminum wheels, still mounted on older Goodyear Eagle tires. The Cobra got different taillights than the GT and LX Mustangs, plus a unique rear spoiler.

The suspension also received attention from SVT, with custom-valved shocks and struts along with different springs and sway bars than the standard GT model. The result was a softer riding Mustang with lots of grip. The resulting package had more body roll, but ultimately better handling (this was more in the European mold, rather than the ultra-stiff ride most American manufacturers used).

This car car came with all its important paperwork, including the original window sticker showing a total price of $22,078 and a Marti report that confirms its May 10, 1993, build date.

A clean Carfax report, showing only a single entry from June 1993, further adds to the car’s preserved history.

For Mustang fans, this 12-mile Cobra represents more than just a collector’s item; it stands as a perfectly preserved benchmark of the car that kicked off Ford’s entire SVT performance line.
