When Chevrolet’s econobox Nova made its debut in 1962, it was released to go head-to-head with Ford’s Falcon. The Nova’s good looks caused car buyers to embrace these versatile and lightweight cars and a star was born. In 1966, Chevy decided it was the right time to introduce a redesign and there is no denying the strikingly good looks the second-gen Nova offered consumers when new. The new styling was based in part on the Super Nova concept car and is still a timeless hot rod.
In fact, the second-generation Nova is still a hot item amongst enthusiasts, and the cost of acquiring even a nice driver-quality example is more than some can afford. Luckily, the folks at Dream Giveaway Garage can fulfill that yearning for one Nova aficionado.
As you can see, the red ’66 being offered in the sweepstake could be the perfect hot rod. We don’t have a lot of information about the restoration, but I will say that it appears to be a quality job — the car looks perfect. Sure, this car might not be a Concours-type restoration, but it is an exceptionally well put together, above-average, driver-quality ride — and that is a good thing. The reason I say that, is this is definitely a car that the new owner can get into and take for a drive just about anywhere they would like.
On The Road Again
In fact, I actually got to experience driving the car in the hot Florida sun as I racked up the miles driving around Largo, Florida. When I first fired up the little 327 engine, I was met with a very OE-esque-sounding muscle car. The exhaust note was not too loud but still announced itself as a powerhouse of the ‘60s. The engine was not built to be a track monster that is hard to control on the street. Rather, the idle has a nice lope, and driving around town was more than pleasurable.
I think what even made the ride more enjoyable was the four-speed shifter poking through the floor. Driving a car like this really is an experience. It’s not like jumping into a late-model daily with an automatic transmission and driving to work. No sir, this car will make you want to drive to work, it is that much fun to drive.
I will admit, having more modern seating and air conditioning might make long drives more comfortable, but the interior is ‘60s-simple and more than adequate. The Standard interior features vinyl seat coverings, basic AM radio, and an in-dash-mounted clock. And in true hot rod fashion, a vintage Moon tachometer and under-dash gauges complete the look.
Driving this car is akin to sitting in a time capsule. Rowing the gears was effortless and immediately put my mind back to an earlier time. As I drove around Largo, I couldn’t remove the ear-to-ear smile that seemed to be a permanent fixture. The car worked flawlessly, and I did not want to return to the Dream Giveaway shop. Alas, I had to.
