Clutch advancement has come a long way over the years and continues to do so. Clutches now days use an assortment of designs, materials, and even multiple discs. Tilton Engineering has been at the forefront of racing-clutch design since 1972. It has taken all of its acquired racing knowledge and integrated it into the new ST-246 twin-disc clutch.
The ST-246 twin-disc clutch is a high-performance clutch designed exclusively for the street car market. According to Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Tilton Engineering, Kirk Skaufel, the company has had such excellent success in all types of motorsports — including Nascar and Indycar racing — that it decided to take a shot at the performance street market. Kirk said, “We decided to take the technology that we have learned in the racing market and apply it to the performance street market.”
The ST-246 is a 246mm clutch, which is about 9.7-inches in diameter. The size of the new design is considerably smaller than a factory-style clutch, which helps lower inertia allowing the engine to accelerate and decelerate quicker than the larger units. This is not the only advantage of the ST-246.
The additional disc will increase torque capacity while reducing the wear rate, due to the increased surface area. Tilton also offers a couple of different materials for the clutch discs. According to Steve, the organic disc will hold 850 lb-ft of torque capacity while its Cerametallic disc will hold 1250 lb-ft of torque.
Tilton Engineering also had its new 6000 series hydraulic release bearing on display at the 2019 SEMA show. The unit is designed to fit the popular T56 transmissions, TREMEC TKO units, as well as direct replacements for the gen-five and gen-six Camaros, along with the C5, C6, and C7 Corvettes. As you may know, the OEM release bearings are not known for reliability in high-performance applications. Tilton has tested this unit to over 1,000,000 cycles, and according to Steve, “It just keeps on ticking.”
