The Wiseco/K1 Technologies team certainly piqued a lot interest at SEMA by showing off an innovated “cage piston” design.
The patented design is said to resist side loading yet offers a stiffer, lighter and stronger part than older, conventional designs. Basically, Wiseco combines the benefits of boxed and full-round designs to keep a low center of gravity towards the pin journal while maintaining stiffness. The design results in 44% less skirt area, which reduces drag and friction, yet can also increase skirt stiffness. Wiseco says the pistons can be manufactured with different skirt designs, including asymmetric or variable strut/skirt configurations.
Wiseco was also on top of the FA20 engine craze, offering a 10.5:1 HD forging for the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S.
“It is the only true turbo piston available,” says Wiseco’s Ron Shearer.
In addition, Wiseco showed off a number of new applications for its line of pistons, including a billet piece for the wildly popular Hemi shootout cars. Other pistons new to the lineup include:
- ProTru Sportsman for LS engines that offers an 11:1 compression ratio with a postive 4cc dome. This piston also features Wiseco’s unique ArmorGlide skirt coating that lowers friction and improve wear resistance. The LS piston also comes with a 1/16-1/16-3/16 ring set.
- New piston Chrysler small-block with a 13.5:1 compression ratio (+8cc dome), ArmorGlide coating and cut for .043-.043-3mm rings with gas ports.
New applications from Wiseco include, from left, LS, Chrysler small block, Chrysler Hemi and Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S
“Testing has just begun on this new setup but it’s already made over 1,150 horsepower and run 9.0 at 156 mph in JPC’s supercharged shop car,” adds Shearer.
The new K1 Coyote stroker includes billet steel crank, H-beam rods and a choice of 94 or 95mm pistons.
