Ridetech has always had a no-nonsense approach to supplying musclecars and hot rods with top-tier suspension, from performance bushings to bolt-on four-link systems. Lucky for us gearheads, they’re sticking to that approach for 2016 and offering its new ‘StreetGrip’ system. We talked with Darren Schilling, the sales manager for Ridetech, who told us a little about the product.
He started by stating that the StreetGrip system is “one of the most efficient hot rod suspensions in the world. Ride tech was looking to pick out some of the most important parts to improve your musclecar’s ride and handling, while staying within the $2000-$2500 price range for a system.”
Schilling also told us that they started with all-aluminum monotube shocks and replaced the factory rubber bushings with Delrin bushings — eliminating the stiction and flexion characteristic of OEM rubber. For the rear, an all-composite mono-leaf spring was used, dropping 50 to 60 pounds from factory setups and improving ride quality. Delrin bushings are again used in the rear link springs to reduce lateral movement.
Up in front, dual-rate coil springs are used. According to Schilling they will offer good ride quality under normal driving conditions — with a 480- to 500-pound spring-rate — and spike to about a 700-pound spring rate under compression from hard driving. Complementing the coil springs is a front sway bar with Delrin inserts inside the bushing, rounding out the entire system to drastically improve handling and drivability.
Schilling mentioned that the target applications for this system are the ’67-’69 Camaro, ’70-’81 Camaro, ’64-’67 GM A-body, and ’68-’72 GM A-body. He said some applications coming in the next year include early C10s, ’58-’64 Impalas and Tri-Fives, and ’78-’88 G-bodies.
