SEMA 2021: Hamburger’s Superchargers Stage II Kit For LT-1 Camaros

When you can make the landscape better than when you found it, you have done something worthy of praise. Ed Hamburger is one of those people. In addition to his product line of superchargers, he is enshrined in the NHRA Northeast Division Hall of Fame for drag racing, and started his first business in 1970, which became one of the first Chrysler Direct Connection Performance Parts Distributors in the country. Hamburger also started an oil pan company that became the dominant performance oil pan supplier in NASCAR Cup racing and NHRA drag racing. From there, he went on to form Street Legal Performance (SLP) which broke new ground in the performance parts industry.

SLP earned the distinction of being the very first company in the performance-parts industry to develop and manufacture a totally integrated and emission-legal performance package for vehicles that were accepted in all 50 states. SLP has since become Specialty Vehicle Engineering. What do you do when you’ve changed the performance-parts world for the better? If you are Ed Hamburger, you start another company. In July of 2018, Ed launched Hamburger’s Superchargers, to start selling the centrifugal supercharger kits that were developed for all the GM, Dodge, and Jeep Specialty Vehicle packages offered by Specialty Vehicle Engineering.

New Product Debut

This brings us up to date on the history of Hamburger’s Superchargers and its product debut at the 2021 SEMA tradeshow. We were shown the new Stage II Camaro Supercharger Competition kit (Part Number: 90430T-SII) by none other than Ed Hamburger himself. “This unit makes upwards of 700 horsepower. It has 12 pounds of boost and uses our largest head unit,” he says. This particular kit is designed for 2016 through 2022 Camaro LT-1.

“Our heads are fluid-driven,” Ed explains. “It is a planetary drive that uses a viscous fluid that avoids having to use gears. That allows it to spin up to 90,000 rpm as compared to the 60,000 rpm capability in all the other centrifugal superchargers.”

We wanted to know what the advantage of spinning faster and using fluid really meant. “It’s dead quiet,” he answered. “It is quieter than your alternator. You can’t hear it run.” Then there is the performance side of things. “It is much more efficient than a gear-driven unit is. That’s what it is all about. It’s also half the size of those other units.”

So there’s weight savings and efficiency, but there is one more major benefit to the Hamburger supercharger. “Because of the speed that it turns, you don’t have that ‘turbo lag.’ There is a lot of low-end torque,” Ed explained.
