SEMA 2022: GM B-Body Coilover Suspensions From QA1

While walking the floor at SEMA, we were instantly drawn to this super-blue, LS-powered 1971 Chevy Impala drop-top in the QA1 booth. Those gold 26-inch wheels immersed in that sea of blue were more than enough to catch our eye. The fact it was a convertible only added to the cool factor.

While this style of build may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there’s no denying the quality and effort leading to its completion. We spoke with QA1’s Dave Kass about this car, and he showed us exactly why it was highlighted on their precious carpeted space in their booth.

QA1 has designed each of these kits to specifically address the needs of big-wheel builds. Proper geometry and centering of the rear wheels in the wheel openings ensure the cars look great and perform even better.

Dave explains, “The Donks, the Boxes, the Bubbles – while this may not be your style, you can’t deny the craftsmanship exhibited by so many of these builds.” QA1 has been supplying aftermarket suspension components for a broad scope of GM vehicles, and when they started seeing the company’s wares adapted to fit under these raised behemoths, the folks at QA1 decided to engineer components to not only allow for the modifications but also permit the proper geometry as well.

Built For Big Wheels

As you can imagine, fitting up to a 28-inch wheel on your Impala or Caprice takes a little engineering to make it all fit. The fact that QA1’s components are lighter and stronger than OEM makes this option a no-brainer. Replacing those factory coils with QA1 coilovers allows for an adjustable ride height to get the perfect stance and three shock valving options to fine-tune the ride and performance of the vehicle.

People were already buying our products to build these cars for years. We decided to design products that address the needs of this style of build. – Dave Kass, QA1

QA1 offers kits for 1971 through ’76, 1977 through ’90, and 1991 through ’96 Impalas and Caprices, including front and rear sway bars, upper and lower front control arms, and upper and lower trailing arms for the rear. All components are bolt-ons, and no welding is required.

QA1 has just been awarded the Hot Rod Industry Alliance’s “Business of the Year” award at SEMA thanks to their innovative support of the automotive hobby. Congratulations!
