The 1969 Dodge Charger is one of those cars that just has a unique look and it’s hard to really improve its appearance. Well, Jim and Mike Ring found a way to take a Dodge Charger to the next level with their creation known as “TUSK.” This classic Dodge received the full Ringbrothers treatment and has been transformed into a truly remarkable vehicle.
You don’t create a car like TUSK overnight. The Ringbrothers spent months in the shop going over the Charger from front to back making sure every detail of the car was perfect. The goal was to take what Gary Ragle Designs put on paper, and convert it into a working vehicle that would blow people’s minds.
The Roadster Shop built a custom FAST TRACK Stage III chassis that would be used as the foundation of TUSK. A set of Fox RS SV coilover shocks are the featured component of TUSK’s suspension. The shocks are mated to a Roadster Shop suspension system. You’ll find a custom Woodward steering rack under the Charger’s nose. In the rear, a Strange Engineering 9-inch housing filled with 31-spline axles rounds out the vehicle’s underpinnings.
At each corner a is set of Baer’s Extreme 6S six-piston calipers live inside the Ringbrothers TUSK edition HRE wheels. The massive 19×10.5-inch front wheels, and 20×13-inch are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. This wheel and tire package gives TUSK the perfect stance and look.
TUSK’s body got plenty of attention during the build. The Ringbrothers took the Charger’s front end and did some extensive modifications. A one-piece exposed carbon-fiber surround that features a single piece of billet machined chrome trim that highlights the “blind-eye” grille. The bumpers have been narrowed and tucked to enhance TUSK’s muscular lines.
There are plenty of other custom touches that can be found on TUSK including the removal of the windshield cowl vents, reshaped and extended rear quarter end caps, new door skins, extended and lowered rocker panels, one-off belly pan, lower rear valance, and custom driveline tunnel and floors.
“The Charger’s ‘coke-bottle’ body is the perfect canvas to push the limits of what we can do and showcase our in-house talent and capabilities,” said Ringbrothers co-owner Jim Ring. “TUSK took over 5,000 hours to complete and is a radical rethink of the classic Charger, marrying the aesthetics of a 20th-century icon with the rigorous build quality and signature touches Ringbrothers has become renowned for.”
Now, you can’t build such an amazing car and stick a pedestrian powerplant under the hood. The Ringbrothers stuffed one of the limited edition Hellephant mills in between the Charger’s front fenders. This supercharged 426 cubic-inch modern HEMI cranks out 1,000 horsepower and 950 ft-lbs of torque. A six-speed TREMEC T-56 Magnum transmission from Bowler was selected to transfer the horsepower to the rear wheels.
Steve Pearson at Upholstery Unlimited was tasked with installing TUSK’s interior. Instrumentation is handled by a set of Dakota Digital gauges. The driver controls TUSK’s movements thanks to a custom Ringbrothers Murph steering wheel with 3K carbon hoop and gold embellished. A Vintage Air Gen IV Magnum Evaporator kit handles all the vehicle’s climate control needs. When the occupants of TUSK aren’t listening to the Hellephant sing its horsepower song, they can listen to the JL Audio sound system that’s controlled by a Retro Manufacturing head unit.
“Performance and design shaped this build. It really shows what can be accomplished when cutting-edge techniques work in tandem with painstaking levels of detail and imagination,” added Ringbrothers co-owner Mike Ring. “The second-gen Charger is one of those cars that’s so iconic as the zenith of American muscle car styling and performance, and that’s what we set out to replicate with this build. Of course, we must thank our partners HRE Wheels, BASF, Miller Welding, and others for supporting us every step of the way.”
TUSK is a groundbreaking build that showcases all the skills at the disposal of the Ringbrothers team. If you get the opportunity to check out TUSK in person, do it. You’ll spend a lot of time appreciating the attention to detail that was put into this amazing build.
