1963 Corvette Z06/N03: The Ultimate Split Window “Tanker”

Few Chevrolets carry as much mystique as the 1963 Corvette Z06/N03 “Big Tank” split window coupe. One of just 63 N03 tank coupes built that year, and a subset of the 199 total 1963 Z06 Corvettes, this car was engineered to be far more than a stylish street cruiser; it was purpose-built for endurance racing and high-performance driving under pressure.

1963 Corvette Z06

With its Tuxedo Black exterior and original black interior, the car presents a stealthy, purposeful appearance. The VIN 30837S115727 identifies it as a St. Louis–assembled 1963 split window coupe. The Z06 option was offered only in coupe form, and when paired with the N03 “big tank” package, it became one of the rarest combinations in Corvette history.

The L84 Fuel-Injected Small-Block: Heart Of A Legend

At the core of this 1963 Corvette Z06/N03 is the L84 327 cubic-inch small-block V-8, factory rated at 360 horsepower with Rochester mechanical fuel injection. In 1963, Chevrolet offered several versions of the 327, but the L84 stood at the top of the range. The Rochester fuel injection system was a masterpiece of mechanical engineering, utilizing high-flow intake runners and precise metering to deliver instant throttle response.

This high-revving small-block ran a compression ratio of 11.25:1 and used a solid-lifter camshaft, which allowed it to spin freely to 6,500 rpm. The result was a powerplant that delivered sharp response, smooth torque delivery, and class-leading performance. Backing the engine is an M20 4-speed manual transmission and a G81 4.11 Positraction rear end, both standard on Z06 cars to ensure power is reached on the pavement effectively.

The 1963 Corvette Z06 package also included heavy-duty metallic brakes with cooling fans, upgraded suspension, shocks, springs, and a front sway bar. The N03 option added a massive 36.5-gallon fiberglass fuel tank, intended for long-distance endurance racing. The combination made the Z06/N03 the most capable competition Corvette available directly from Chevrolet in 1963.

Rarity And Auction Stakes

Only a handful of 1963 Corvette Z06/N03 “big tank” coupes are known to exist today, making each one an automotive treasure. This example, delivered new to Bud Gage Chevrolet on May 23, 1963, retains its period-correct specification and rare P48 Kelsey-Hayes cast aluminum knock-off wheels.

As it prepares to cross the block on Saturday, November 1st, at Mecum’s Dallas/Fort Worth 2025 auction, collectors and enthusiasts alike are expected to take notice. The 1963 Corvette Z06/N03 represents one of the purest expressions of Chevrolet’s early racing ambition, a factory-built endurance weapon wrapped in one of the most iconic body designs ever made.
