It’s been almost 55 years since famed race car driver and engineer Ken Miles first stomped the throttle of a 1965 Mustang Shelby GT350 fastback coupe, rocketing his team to victory at Green Valley Raceway in Texas on February 14, 1965. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, Ford Motor Company has announced the release of an all-new, super-limited version of the heavily revised Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R, both of which will receive a unique “Heritage Edition Package.”
In a press release, Ford has revealed that it will produce all Heritage Edition fastbacks in “Wimbledon White,” and then accent them with “Guardsman Blue” side and top racing stripes. While the obvious tip-of-the-hat to the 1965 GT350 developed by Carroll Shelby may immediately come to mind, many may not know that these colors are also a salute to the United States itself, as blue and white have been the country’s assigned international racing colors since the 1950s.
“Looking back on it, what Ford and Carroll Shelby created back in the mid-’60s was so important to Mustang,” said Jim Owens, Ford Mustang marketing manager. “With their authentic exterior livery, unique appointments, and performance Ken could have only dreamed of, the Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R Heritage Edition Package vehicles are a meaningful tribute to the legacy of the Shelby brand.”
Naturally, throwback Heritage Editions of both the GT350 and GT350R will sport all of the upgrades recently bestowed upon them by Ford’s engineers, but with some additional aesthetic additions. These include front and rear exterior badges that have been coated in Guardsman Blue, and an exclusive dash badge inside for identification purposes. In addition, GT350R models will receive all-black seats with red stitching.
While the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350 has a $60,440 MSRP before taxes and all that jazz, GT350R buyers can expect to spend $73,435 for a base model. Adding the Heritage Edition Package to either of these vehicles will bump the sticker price up by $1,965. Dealers are taking orders as we speak, and cars are set to ship as early as spring, so we suggest putting in your order for a Shelby Mustang GT350 or GT350R Heritage Edition Package ASAP.
