Battle Of The Builders Hits The Street Machine Nationals

Each year, SEMA organizes a Battle of the Builders (BOTB) competition, and the cars that are brought to the challenge are amazing. The competition even has a Young Guns division for those aspiring automotive creators to compete with others of the same age.

Supporting and inspiring young builders is crucial to the future of the automotive hobby. The Young Guns category is designed to encourage young builders to pursue their passions, and shine the light on those up-and-coming builders.

The Young Guns is a designation within the overall BOTB competition to give recognition to builders at the SEMA Show, who are under the age of 27 (as of November 8, 2019). Those who have selected the Young Guns category on the online application — as well as young builders who were awarded a Young Guns prize package from a regional partner — are eligible to participate.

All competitors in the Young Guns category will be competing against the overall field of builders, regardless of how they entered the competition.

There are several regional competitions that will qualify a Young Gun to compete, and the SEMA Battle of the Builders Young Guns competition returns again this year to the Street Machine Nationals, with qualifying rounds at both the Du Quoin, Illinois, (June 21-23) and St. Paul, Minnesota, (July 19-21) events.

The SEMA Young Guns competition is open to anyone ages 27 or younger who builds their vehicle primarily on their own. Participants can submit an application for an opportunity to be chosen by SEMA for one of the qualifying rounds at a Street Machine Nationals event.

A total of 10 vehicles will be selected to compete at each of the two Street Machine Nationals events. Applications can be submitted at www.semayoungguns.com. SEMA will contact those chosen to compete at a Street Machine Nationals Events.

Battle of the Builders

Last year, Daniel Dent and his C10 won at the Street Machine Nationals and made the trip to SEMA.

A winner will be awarded from each of the Street Machine Nationals events, and will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas (November 5-8, 2019), transportation of the winner’s vehicle, a designated feature spot at the SEMA show, and entry into the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition.

Last year, Daniel Dent of Bonnie, Illinois, won the Young Guns competition at the Du Quoin Street Machine Nationals. The then 20-year-old’s vehicle was a 1972 Chevy C10 pickup truck. Among the major aspects of the build that Dent completed were a stunning paint job that took three tries to finally get the finish he wanted. Dent also installed a new transmission, which he removed from an RV and modified to fit the C10. He also put a tuned-port-injected engine in the hauler, which was pulled from another truck.

Professional Street Machine Nationals judges and celebrity judges will choose one Young Guns participant as the winner from the Du Quoin Street Machine Nationals, June 21-23 and one winner at the St. Paul Street Machine Nationals July 19-21.
