If you are a purist, turn away. This 1970 Mach 1 SportsRoof is clean. However, it is far from stock. Pop the hood and there is something special lurking underneath. Rather than a 351 Cleveland it is a modern Coyote 5.0-liter engine topped by one of VMP Performance’s Gen2R TVS superchargers that powers this classic pony.

“This black beauty is not your typical 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1,” says VMP. “Under the hood is a ’15-’17 Coyote engine with a VMP Gen2R supercharger.”

VMP Performance’s Stage 2 Gen2R TVS supercharger is a potent performer in most vehicles, but it really stands out when topping a Coyote in a 1970 Mach 1. It pushed this classic Mustang beyond 650 horsepower at the rear wheels.

If you aren’t familiar with the nuances of VMP’s supercharger line, the Gen2R improves upon the Gen2 supercharger. Both are based on Eaton’s 2.3-liter rotorpack, but the R version further improves the blower’s inlet airflow.

“I really like the cleaned-up exterior look; smoother, bolder, and in your face,” Justin Starkey explained when this blower was released. “In the performance department, it flows 5 percent more at the upper operating range of the TVS rotorpack. This translates into 20-30 more horsepower.”

When paired with VMP’s Triple Pass Heat Exchanger, the Gen2R pushed this Coyote classic’s rear-wheel output to 656 horsepower and 562 lb-ft of torque, which is quite a bit more than it sported back in the ’70s.
