You know what they say about burnouts – the size and power behind a burnout gives you an idea of what’s to come. However, we know how many horses each of these cars are putting out and we also know which of these beasts comes out on top, despite any test results. It feels good to show up a long-time rival and it looks like there’s a lot of fun to be had while doing it.

If you haven’t gathered already, this match-up is between two domestic rivals that have been getting quite a bit of attention lately, the 2013 Shelby GT500 and the 2012 Camaro ZL1. Many performance tests have been between these too, whether it’s testing who dominates the road course, the drag strip, or just being plain awesome.

The pair of rivals were given three tries at burning up the long straight away at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, California. Tthe Shelby took first place in this battle, along with another fun fact, the ZL1’s burnout was less than HALF of the Mustang’s burnout. We knew that the Shelby would dominate, we just didn’t know by how much! According to Edmund’s Inside Line, “no production car has ever been more perfectly engineered for the slaughter of tires”! We concur.

The ZL1 has a couple things working against it’s ability to lay down a mean burnout. Inside Line tested the same ZL1 during the dyno test previously came up hard against the rev limiter at 6,200 rpm just when the wheels start to gain some momentum, it’s forced to downshift into 2nd gear where recovering is pretty hard to do. The ZL1’s sibling, the naturally-aspirated Camaro SS, is better suited in destroying tires.

The Shelby has no problem slaying it’s Goodyear F1s considering that that it hits 7,000 rpms before the rev limiter kicks in. The Shelby has no problem spinning the tires and tatting up the tarmac. According to the source, it seemed as if the pavement was coated in Crisco! The tires started spinning as smooth as butter. The burnout marks are 472 feet, 5 inches of awesomeness and 149 feet longer than the Corvette Z06’s performance in the May 2010 Burnout Supertest.

Would you believe that this new ’13 Shelby is the best burnout car in the history of all burnouts so far? We’ll take it!
