Chevrolet Special Service Silverado Joins Police Lineup

As Chevrolet looks to expand its lineup of vehicles used in police service, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Special Service Vehicle enters the equation, going on sale this summer. The SSV package is available in 1WT or 1LS trim packages, both of which include the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine producing 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque. The engine is also available with E85 fueling capabilities, while the vehicle is available in both 2WD and 4WD models with a choice of the standard 6-foot-6-inch box or the shorter 5-foot-8-inch box.

The truck has been built with special service in mind, arriving with a standard 170-amp alternator and 730CCA auxiliary battery designed to allow officers to operate the radio, lights, computers, cameras, and other equipment while the engine is turned off and still retain primary battery charge. In addition, there is a 110-volt outlet to allow equipment to be plugged in.

Continuing the service theme, the SSV Silverado offers options to delete the center front seat to provide more room for police equipment, an available common key option to allow municipalities to use one key to operate all of their 2015 Silverado and Tahoe SSV vehicles, and ship-through options for the upfit of light bars, sirens, partitions, and other aftermarket equipment.

The engine uses direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing to achieve the best-in-class 23 miles per gallon highway economy rating on 2WD models, and the vehicle also includes Duralife brake rotors to increase service intervals on the highly-used vehicles.
