The “Tail of the Dragon,” is an iconic 11-mile stretch of Highway 129 located south of Knoxville, Tennessee. It is considered one of the world’s most famous destinations for driving enthusiasts who flock to it annually looking for a thrill ride. In its 11-mile span, the Tail of the Dragon boasts 318 curves! Every curve is unique with some banked corners like a race track, off-camber twists, and decreasing radius corners.
On October 16th, 2015 and during the 38th Annual Corvette Expo, the Tail of the Dragon was host to more than 400 Corvette owners looking to set a world record for the most Corvettes cruising the famous highway. According to WVLT Local 8 News, Corvette Expo owner Byron Cooper stated, “We got cars from 8,900 miles away driving here for the event and to cruise the Dragon.” On the interview, Cooper also stated, “There is no record, so we’ll set the record and that will give us something to play off for years.”
According to GM Authority, 423 Corvettes, mostly C4, C6, and C7 models participated in last weekend’s Tail of the Dragon Cruise. Among the 423 participants there were three C1 Vettes, two 1957s and a 1959.
Participants reported that it was an amazing sight as car aficionados from all over North America drove their Corvettes to support the 38th Annual Corvette Expo, and cruise the Tail of the Dragon for the first world record. The application has been submitted to Guinness, but the record is not official yet. Due to the success of the event, Expo coordinators stated that they would not be surprised if the number of Corvette participants doubles next year.
