Drifting A Twin-Turbo Callaway C4 Corvette

When the C4 Corvette first came on the scene, it was amazing how that Cross-Fire inducted two-seater turned the automotive world on its ear. In its first official year of production, it was awarded the coveted Golden Calipers as Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. It was soon boosted to new levels thanks to the B2K twin-turbo Callaway option available through Chevrolet dealers.

Hard To Beat

Things improved performance-wise with Chevy’s Tune-Port Injection system. While not noted for sky-high horsepower numbers or revving to the moon, the jump from 205 ponies to a verified 230 horsepower was a step in the right direction. The lowly C4 wound up dominating the competition in SCCA Showroom Stock classes and both the Playboy and Escort Endurance Championships from 1985 through 1987. It was so hard to beat a C4 Corvette that it was subsequently banned from competition. This resulted in a 10-race, Corvette-only series known as the awesome and oh-so-wild Corvette Challenge. The cars, the series, and the antics would make for a great story — for another time. Right now, let’s focus on this twin-turbo Callaway C4.

Callaway B2K Corvette engine

There was a lot of engineering involved to shoehorn two turbos, intercoolers, and the necessary tubing underneath a C4 Corvette’s hood, but Callaway made it look easy.

It was during this time of excitement, budding technology, and ever-increasing horsepower numbers that a small company was contracted to begin up-fitting brand-new Corvettes with twin-turbo systems. Enter Callaway Cars, an up-and-coming company that Chevy tasked with completing the build of 1987 Corvettes purchased through Chevrolet dealers using Regular Production Option (RPO) code B2K. Over the next five years, Callaway Cars upgraded 510 Tune-Port-equipped Corvettes to B2K status, making these Corvettes highly sought by collectors.

The C4 looks to be in pretty good shape. The car reportedly has 46,000 miles on the odometer, which means someone has been enjoying it, but nothing like what this Vlogger has planned.

Time marches on, and overall performance increased exponentially during subsequent generations. Today, it’s hard to convince people of the C4’s domination, but then again, many of them weren’t even born then. The C4 has suffered from the depreciating values that every vehicle must endure, but for many, they are far from worthless.

Cheap Enough To Beat On

For those wanting an old-school feel with modern conveniences, the C4 Corvette is an excellent value for the money. The generation also appears to be the darling of those who want to “enjoy the car” far beyond what many Concours judges might consider acceptable. For the sake of Corvette buy-in, C4 Corvettes are relatively cheap and when it comes to having fun, they’re hard to beat. Or are they?

Our Vlogger states that he "dressed for the occasion" and of course, this is the "Gold Door Handle" edition of C4. Many Corvette enthusiasts might cringe at the way this poor C4 endures laying down some rubber, but the true C4 guys will marvel at the condition of the weatherstripping!

A case in point is the 1990 twin-turbo Callaway B2K Corvette convertible in this video. The owner, known as Zephyr Speed Shop on YouTube just purchased the car out of Florida with only 46,000 miles on the odometer. He admits this is his first (but not last) C4 Corvette and the premise of this video is just the beginning of his “learning how to enjoy” his Corvette.

Now, the way Mr. Speed Shop enjoys his Corvette may be VERY different from what you’ve witnessed in the past. But it’s not nearly all that he has planned for his Corvette’s future. Besides “totally destroying” those Goodyear Eagle tires, Speed also intends on drag racing his C4, and entering it in various autocross events and even some ½-mile and standing-mile drag races.

Those Tune-Port Injected Corvettes were never known for rev-limited, high-horsepower operation. And although the twin-turbo, Callaway B2K option didn’t boost horsepower numbers considerably, it did amazing things to the engine’s torque output, boosting performance to 382 horsepower and 562 lb-ft of torque! Easily enough to shred any tire, especially those with a two-decade-old date code. Even if you would never do such a thing with your Corvette, you can check out the video and watch someone else who does!
