The Camaro has gone through many changes over the past 45 years. It’s been through five generations of body styling, countless powertrains, millions of fans, and has an immense aftermarket. The popularity of the Camaro has soared to new heights since it’s reintroduction in 2010, and it just continues to grow.
In its current iteration it offers buyers a 323hp V6 and three different V8 engines, all ranging from 400-580hp. With it’s better-than-ever handing, build quality, and (arguably) looks, the fact that it’s such a huge hit is not really a surprise. Maybe that’s why it was voted as the most popular car at SEMA in 2011, or why aftermarket companies are gobbling them up by the pound to use as guinea pigs to showcase their latest product offerings?
Now even motor oil giant Mobil 1 has picked up a 2012 Camaro RS/SS convertible to help advertise their own products. As we heard from our friends over at TheBlock.com, their theme for the car is a pro-touring style build that will take the car to new levels of performance by bolting some of the aftermarkets best components to it and ReFuel Motor Culture will be the team responsible for organizing the build process on the Camaro.
“Our aim is to build an everyday street car that would turn heads not only on the street but on the track as well.” Andy Williamson of ReFuel Motor Culture tells TheBlock.com, “The vision is to follow an old school Pro Touring Motorsport feel, using new technology and top-notch functional parts, but at the same maintain its street car drivability. We want to make a good amount of power with this car to show off the capability of the LS3 engine, as well as some Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Racing products.”
The team at ReFuel will be working side by side with Chevrolet Performance on a few exciting new performance parts for the Camaro. The rolling stock will come from fifteen52 Wheels paired with Nitto Tires. An aggressive stance and improved handling will come from KW Suspension for a great setup on the street and track. Sicom Brakes will also be developing a custom ceramic composite brake system for the car.
“As a focal point of power, we’re working with Turbonetics on a custom, single turbo setup for the LS3″ says Williamson, “as well as working with our Mobil 1 Racing team on using Mobil 1 Racing Oil when we set up the car for track use. We want to show real world enthusiasts our take on the Camaro and the steps we took to accomplish it.”
Keeping all that Turbonetics-infused power to the pavement, fifteen52 wheels wrapped Nitto rubber will be attached to KW Suspension will be called upon.
Williamson also says ReFuel will be working with the guys at Lashway Motorsports in Pompano Beach, Florida on the build. “They’re a young group that specializes in LS engines and especially Camaro setups. And they’ve got some serious tricks up their sleeves for this project.” He says. “We’ll be cataloging everything along the way to help educate real deal, everyday enthusiasts on how they can achieve similar results for their projects. It will be a fun project to follow.”
Indeed. Since this car is yet to go under the knife as of this writing, we don’t have any build or final product shots to share with you. However, we anticipate the conclusion of this project like the rest of you, so we’ll be sure to keep you posted as things progress.
