Get ready for a blast from the past–on Saturday August 9th kustoms, hot rods, and 60s wild style big-bodies will be pulling up to Bob’s Big Boy in historic Downey, California for the 4th Bedlam at the Broiler.
Bob’s Big Boy is the perfect setting for a nostalgia event as it was originally the site of Johnie’s Broiler that existed from 1958 to 2001. “Johnie’s broiler is a Googie style coffee shop and drive-in restaurant founded and initially named after owner Harvey Ortner who was previously a partner in the famous Clock Broiler Restaurants of Alhambra, Lynwood, Bellflower, Culver City, Van Nuys, South Pasadena, and Temple City.”
“During The Broiler’s heyday, hot rods and kustoms would cruise a route of popular carhop drive-in restaurants. One of the cruise circuits began in Long beach at Grisinger’s (now George’s) drive-in, continuing on to Holly’s (featured in the movie Pulp Fiction just prior to its demolition) in Hawthorne, on to the Wich Stand on Slauson and Overhill, and ending in Downey at the famous “Broiler.”
With the third wave of Kustom Kulture constantly on the rise in the 21st century Southern California is bustling with new annuals each year, Bedlam at the Broiler is one such event that is quickly becoming a crowd favorite. This year the show will be hosted by the nationally renowned pinup, Miss Ruby Champagne.
