Ford Confesses: The Shelby GT500 Will Deliver 760 HP Stock

The wait is over: Ford has finally announced the all-new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 will produce 760 horsepower and 625 lb.-ft. of torque.

According to Ford, it makes the 2020 GT500 the most powerful street-legal Ford ever – with the most power- and torque-dense supercharged production V8 engine in the world. Ford disclosed the horsepower and torque ratings are based on premium fuel per SAE J1349 standard.

“As a Mustang, it has to be attainable and punch above its weight,” said Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance vehicle programs.

“To that end, we’ve set a new standard among American performance cars with our most powerful street-legal V8 engine to date, plus the quickest-shifting transmission ever in a Mustang for all-out precision and speed.”

Bred from the Ford GT and Mustang GT4, the Shelby GT500 features a supercharged 5.2-liter aluminum alloy engine built by hand.

The aluminum alloy block features high-flow aluminum cylinder heads, weight-saving wire-arc cylinder liners, plus larger, forged connecting rods, improved lubrication, and cooling passages.

Atop the engine is one of its most unique features: the 2.65-liter roots-type supercharger with air-to-liquid intercooler has been inverted and sits neatly in the V8 engine valley. According to Ford engineers, this was done to maintain a low center of gravity and keep the intake air cooler.

Beneath the engine is a structural oil pan that adds strength, reduces vibration, and features a baffle system to keep oil in the right locations even during hard cornering.

The component that has raised the most controversy among enthusiasts is the Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Ford said the automatic transmission was selected for its performance as it can shift smoothly in less than 100 milliseconds – faster than any manual gearbox.

While Ford has released the power ratings, the company has not discloed 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times.

The news comes after the final Le Mans 24 race for the factory-supported Ford GT program, fitting as Carroll Shelby, American racer and entrepreneur, created the first-generation Shelby GT500 with a modified 428-cubic-inch V8 inspired by his team’s 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans in 1967.

Today, the GT500 legacy continues with the third-generation 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 – Ford’s most powerful and most advanced Mustang ever.
