Okay, Mustang fans, let’s talk about something that’s been rumored for years. A four-door Mustang. Hoax? Maybe. Impossible? Not anymore because Ford just filed to trademark the name “Mach 4” for a car, and that’s got everyone talking.
Why “Mach 4”? Well, last year, Automotive News reported that Ford showed a bunch of dealers a concept for a four-door Mustang coupe called the Mach 4. They also showed off a lifted, off-road Mustang at the same event.
And get this: one of the cars from that preview, the RTR EcoBoost, is already a real thing. So, there might be some real evidence behind this wild internet rumor. The report, originally spotted by Ford Authority, adds weight to the speculation.
Now, a four-door Mustang might sound like sacrilege to some Mustang enthusiasts. The Mustang has always been a two-door icon, a symbol of freedom and performance. But think about it. Ford’s lineup is basically all trucks and SUVs now, plus the Mach-E electric crossover.
A sleek, four-door, gasoline-powered Mustang could be a cool addition, and it would finally give Ford a sedan offering in the lineup. Imagine a stretched Mustang with that classic fastback roofline but with room for the family and their luggage. And with the “Mach 4” name, it suggests some serious performance is on the table.
What engine would it have? A tuned EcoBoost? The glorious Coyote V8? That’s all speculation at this point, but given that the Mach-E handles the electric side of things, a gas engine seems like the most logical choice.
And what about that off-road Mustang concept? With Porsche selling the 911 Dakar and Lamborghini rolling out the Huracan Sterrato, a jacked-up, rally-ready Mustang doesn’t seem that crazy. It would be a whole lot cheaper than those supercars, too! It would be a unique offering in the market, blending muscle car heritage with off-road capability.
Of course, car companies trademark names all the time, and concepts don’t always make it to production. But all the pieces are starting to fit together.
The “Mach 4” trademark, the dealer preview, the fact that Ford needs something to appeal to sedan buyers, and the success of the Mach-E all point to the possibility of a four-door Mustang finally becoming a reality. It doesn’t matter if you love the idea or hate it because it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
