Future Buick GNX Found in Opel GTC Concept?

This might sound like a stretch of the imagination, but bear with us. For years, Opel enthusiasts (apparently, there are some) have been pining for a new Opel Calibra. Originally introduced in 1990, the front-wheel-drive Vectra-based coupe was an immediate hit in Europe. In the last few years since GM’s aquisition of the brand, Opel and Vauxhaul offered the now-discontinued RWD Holden Monaro coupe in Calibra badging.

As GM sprints to streamline its all-brands parts sharing efforts – particularly between GM and Australian Holden, and Buick and Opel – new design efforts at Opel have hinted at the future of the recently-injected-with-new-life Buick brand.

StreelLegalTV has already reported on the Opel-in-Buick-clothing Regal GS, but a four-door, front-wheel-drive Regal is no replacement for the brand’s once stately turbo V6 muscle car, the Grand National and its sinister sibling, the GNX.

It was some years back in in 2007 when Opel spokesmen mentioned the development of a new Calibra coupe. Based on the GTC concept shown at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show, the two-door, RWD coupe looks to be a “go” thanks to GM Europe’s chief Nick Reilly. Reilly was quoted as saying, “I believe we should have one, so we will have one.”

As Opel tools us for a production Calibra, its hard to imagine that the two-door coupe will remain solely Opel’s, particularly as Buick is enjoying some new found popularity with the Opel DNA infusion. Much of the Buick line is directly lifted from Opel – including its 2.8 liter turbocharged V6 engine, which makes a respectable 325 horsepower.

In its current form, the GTC concept is quite a bit longer than previous two-door Opel Calibras, which is fine for American tastes. And while GM Europe wrings its hands over the necessary 30,000-units-per-year needed to justify a Calibra, it only makes sense to cross brand it with Buick who could greatly benefit from a surge of youthful energy – something which revolutionized Cadillac only a couple of years ago.
