Finding women with automotive careers is not uncommon these days, but still only one quarter of the jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are held by women. As we found out from Faces of GM, one such female is Jully Burau, GM’s Chief Engineer of Full Size Trucks. A gearhead at heart and with a family-tie to boot, Burau has proven once and for all that no matter what job it is in the automotive industry, it’s not just “men’s work” any more. Check out Burau and some of the interesting projects she gets to head in her career with GM in the video above.
After graduating in 1980, Burau first joined the automotive workforce behind the brand name of Buick. Twenty some years later, she moved on to the light and heavy-duty truck division of GM, becoming not only the Chief Engineer of the truck sector, but also one of the leading ladies behind GM’s success.
This week, Burau will be sharing her success story in the automotive industry with other females at the U.S. News STEM Solution National Conference. This conference is held in order to encourage more young women to get into the traditional STEM fields.
If Burau can do it, so can other females and her success story leading up to her current high-end position should provide encouragement to other females looking to get into automotive or other technology and math-driven fields. She may not be a majority, but she certainly is a mentor for all young gals to look up to.
