Go GM or Go Home: A GM-themed Road Trip across the USA

GM Fairfax Assembly Plant

Hey you! You and your family have been planning a summer road trip for a long time now, haven’t you? Perhaps you’ve already chosen your destinations and lined up hotels and whatnot, or are still in the middle of the planning phase. Sure, you can go to Disneyland or Vegas; but wouldn’t you like to share an experience with your kin, and one that will stand out for years to come?

Well, might I suggest this as a possibility: take a road trip to some of GM‘s greatest hotspots!

GM today shares with us an itinerary that’s got something for everyone: engines, assembly lines, and Corvettes! A 5-stop trip spanning fourteen states promises to dazzle and awe you all with a variety of visitor-friendly sites. No matter where you start, or which stops you decide to make, you will certainly gain a great and memorable experience of what GM does to bring the world its sweet cars.

Here are the 5 recommended stops to make:

  • Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant, Kansas City, KN–This factory is one of the only GM plants where you can see the full assembly process; from the first rolls of metal stamped into body panels, through the body shop, paint shop and into general assembly, where the car is started for the very first time. A mere 3.5 miles to the east and across the mighty Mississippi, the “other” Kansas City  lies waiting for your BBQ-craving band of travelers.
  • GM-Renaissance-Center-WintergardenGM Renaissance Center (a.k.a. “Ren Cen”), Detroit, MI–Visit the Motor City to see up close and personal how it all began for this company. Free tours of the GM Showroom are given by a knowledgeable guide, and experienced specialists are ready to answer any and all questions relating to the exhibits. But that is just one facet of the Ren Cen; three restaurants, a movie theater, a spa, shops, and a choice of two hotels round out the “city within a city” layout of this fantastic place.
  • Tonawanda Engine Plant, Buffalo, NY–If you plan on seeing Niagara Falls, why not make a stop at the Tonawanda Engine Plant near Buffalo? Free admission allows you to see how the new Ecotec 2.0L, 2.oL Turbo, and 2.5L (4-cyl.) engines are made before they go into the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, Cadillac CTS, and Cadillac ATS, respectively. In addition, take some time to go fishing in Lake Erie or see Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic style as manifested in the Graycliff estate.
  • Baltimore Transmission Plant, Baltimore, MD–Home of the Super Bowl 2013 champions, Baltimore also serves as the home base of GM’s eco-friendly endeavors, with the manufacture and assembly of its electric motors. GM takes pride in the plant’s very “green” approach, which reportedly is 100% recyclable and sends nothing to the landfill.
  • NCM-1-National-Corvette-MuseumNational Corvette Museum, Bowling Green, KY–A great ending to a wonderful journey, the National Corvette Museum will fascinate and enchant everyone with its exhibits, events, and sheer history of the classic American sports car. Bolster your children’s curiosity in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) one-day “camp” events there, available June 17-21. Click here to check it out.

These are just the recommended stops. You can create your own agenda by going here to see the full list of GM’s facilities, and get their call information to plan accordingly. This year, do something truly enriching: travel the country, visit famous cities, have fun, and learn all about one of American’s greatest companies.
