Traditionally, Sundays were left to the family, to football, to gardening, visiting the relatives or even the occasional car show with traditional hot rods and early muscle cars. Up until recently, if you were a fan of late-model American muscle, well, you were out of luck. What if you’re a die-hard, late-model car guy who wants to get out of the house and smash on the loud-pedal?
As previously reported here, we were there at the Goodguys annual Spring Nationals event in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was there we witnessed a parade of fourth and fifth generation Camaros, a smattering of new Mustangs and even a handful of late-model Mopars. We even stumbled across some G-Bodies and a lone GXP Bonneville. This past weekend, however, we made our way to the sunny beach-side city of Del Mar, California for the Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals.
It was sun and fun for the entire weekend with all of the late-model vehicles allowed in to participate on Sunday. Much like the Scottsdale, Arizona Spring Nationals event, the Del Mar Super Sunday crowd was chalked full of some of our favorite late-models.
With cars like a Cadillac CTS-V, Ford Lightning pickup and even a bone stock convertible ‘Vette, there was plenty of modern eye candy around. It’s one thing to see these somewhat average cars during their daily drive to work and back, but its certainly more entertaining to see them hustling through the cones! We couldn’t of been more pleased, as we always are during the Goodguys events. With friendly staff, tons of action there’s almost nothing we weren’t interested in. We can’t thank Goodguys enough.
Showing us all how to hang it out, these two were having a grand old time in their late-model convertible Mustang.
Check out this Ls-powered GTO slamming it through the cones.
Goodguys opens the doors to all American powered cars on Sunday's at specific events. This allows for an eclectic mix of traditional rods and customs with most American-powered late-model muscle, too.
Thankfully, Goodguys has opened a new avenue for car guys and gals of all ages to get in on the fun of attending a Goodguys National Event in a late-model vehicle. Even though this late-model HEMI Charger ate some cones during its run during the autocross, its all about having fun. It was smiles all around when this Lime Green Charger hit the course.
Their philosophy, as times change, and as their demographic grows and evolves, Goodguys is always reinventing themselves and adapting to new changes in the industry. By expanding the availability of entry for vehicles, Goodguys is able to capture an entirely new audience, which may have been lost in the crowd, literally.
Part of this involves creating a more modern approach to the traditional car show. Sure, there’s tons of late-model car events around your area and all year long, but what’s the fun in that?
Car guys know Goodguys puts on some of the best automotive fun you can have. The initial roll out of Super Sunday events have opened the doors for additional vehicles, mostly aimed towards the younger generations, however, also for the vehicle owner who doesn’t quite have the coin to fund a full, vintage or classic muscle car build.
Seriously, if you've always wanted to try out the autocross, as long as you're a registered participant, dive the car over like this father and son duo in their C5 drop-top 'Vette. The rules are simple: Wear your seatbelt, keep the windows down and when the green light flashes, GO! While the course is designed to keep bursts of speed short, if you're throttle-greedy you can get out of shape quickly. Just check out these skid marks, ouch! Can someone say flat-spot
