Heartbreak For Car Guys: Restored 1968 Camaro Totaled In Crash

This one might hurt if you’re a car enthusiast, especially the Chevy ones. This video has been posted online, and it’s unbelievable to see. A fellow Bowtie enthusiast who goes by the name 67chevellepost on YouTube was involved in a head-on collision that severely damaged the front end of his beloved 1968 Camaro. To make matters sadder, the vehicle was also intended to be his dad’s last race car.

According to the video, this 1968 Camaro has been in his workshop for many years. He’s been working on the race car since 2019 and just recently finished rebuilding the car. The incident occurred just two days after finally getting his 1968 Camaro road-worthy and restored with new old stock (NOS) parts.

The car has been a work in progress for several years. The owner was just finishing up the striping in these photos. Many of the parts he used were new, or new old stock, which makes this incident all the more saddening.

The head-on collision caused major damage to the front-end section of the Camaro, pushing the engine back and potentially bending the body and subframe of the vehicle. The doors are stuck shut, and the owner had to crawl out the window after the accident. Adding insult to injury, not only was the car damaged, but he also experienced some physical injuries as well.

Crashed 1968 Camaro

He fears the big block engine may have been pushed back and damaged. “I’m just sick about it,” the owner said in his video. “This car was more than a hobby; it’s a way of life. It was one of the last things I have of my dad.” He is worried that the car may be totaled but vows to rebuild it no matter the cost. The other driver is said to have been driving a company truck without a license.

The uploader of the video is currently working with his insurance company, Hagerty, to assess the damage and determine the next steps. He is also waiting on the formal police report, which could take several days. This incident reminds us that even a car that had been restored to look like new can be vulnerable to unexpected catastrophes. How the owner rebuilt his beloved Camaro testifies to the tremendous tie between man and machine, especially when the latter holds ties to a loved one’s memory.
