The Ford SVT Lightning remains one of the most beloved performance pickups ever built. While its first iteration made a powerful performer out of the F-150, the second-generation SVT Lightning introduced in 1999 really upped the ante with a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 engine. Today these supercharged trucks find use as daily drivers and drag strip warriors alike.
However, wrestling a 5,000+ pound pickup down the strip at high speeds can be challenging, and even downright dangerous, as not one but two SVT Lightning drivers found out. If you REALLY love these Lightnings, you might not want to play the above video.
Though this video dates back to at least March of 2010, the details on this disastrous accident are pretty much non-existent. Nor can we tell exactly what went wrong to cause the black truck to veer into the red truck’s racing lane. The two Lightnings were barely out of the gate (after a nice wheelstand) when the black Lightning makes a hard left, directly into the path of the red lightning.
The black Lightning was definitely on the receiving end of the worst of the wreck, getting t-boned, spun around, and slammed into the concrete barrier. It’s a nasty accident, though we’re fairly confident both drivers were able to “walk it off.” The performance pickups? Probably not. The black truck is almost definitely totaled, though the red pickup might have been salvageable.
At any rate, this was not a good day for Lightning fans.
