Forced induction is gaining in popularity with performance enthusiasts and car and truck manufacturers alike. GM, Ford, and Mopar have offered supercharged applications over the years, but we see more and more turbochargers, especially in the aftermarket. And while it’s known to use a quality assembly lube when building an engine, new turbochargers are often neglected upon startup, which can rapidly take out bearing material. Usually, when you install a new or rebuilt turbocharger, the bearings inside the unit are dry. Upon startup, the engine needs to build oil pressure before supplying the proper lubrication to the new or rebuilt turbo. Without proper oiling, the turbocharger will not only receive premature wear, but it can also damage the turbo, drastically shortening the life of the unit. 

“Several 100,000 revolutions per minute without sufficient lubrication – that really takes it out of the material,” says Harry Hartkorn, Head of Application Technology at LIQUI MOLY. 

LIQUI MOLY uses a solid lubricant known as MoS2 in its turbo additive and in large doses. The MoS2 attaches to plain bearings’ metal surface, which guarantees lubrication at the turbocharger during the first startup.
