Meet The “Pressure Cooker,” An Octo-Turbo SBC

In today’s automotive industry, we are seeing more and more performance parts being developed to give enthusiasts a wide range of options to increase horsepower.  The turbo – being one of them – is a good option to increase your horsepower via the engine’s exhaust gasses.

It seems every year the bar is raised and the horsepower is increased and records are broken.  Nowadays, 600hp just doesn’t seem like that much, considering there are some stock production cars that produce that much horsepower out of the factory.

We came across an engine that was produced to catch the attention of motorhead enthusiasts for a one of a kind build.  We have all seen engine projects with twin or even quad turbos, but this project is a little more extreme than that as it has eight turbos that are run off each cylinder.

The engine is a 355 cubic inch small block Chevy with a compression ratio of 8:1.  Since there will be one turbo per cylinder, they had to be fairly small.  The builders, Jason and Dano Kennedy of Hot Rods and Cool Stuff, used eight turbos from a three Kubota diesel engines.  When we think of Kubota, we think of a riding lawn mowers, but with the mower’s small turbo sizes, they made for a great fit.

With eight turbos, this engine makes good power, putting down 600 ft. lbs. of torque at just under 3,000rpms at very low boost right around 6-7psi on the dyno.  Sitting on top of the engine is – appropriately – an old school pressure cooker for the turbo’s blow-through design.

The engine was used in the ultimate street rat rod, allowing the owner to use the car in trade shows to attracted enthusiast attention.   If you ever wished you could have a car with eight turbos, then you’re in luck.  They whole set up is for sale over on Racing Junk.com for $24,000.
