Tech Talk: Master Power Brakes updates Truck Disc Brake Kits

Master Power Brakes updated their rear end Disc Brake conversion kit for Ford and Chevy truck applications with a goal to improve the pre-existing product. “Not long ago, we had a situation come up that forced us to look at these kits,” Master Power Brakes said in a press release. “And after a hard look, we determined it was time to make some changes. But we didn’t want to make changes just to be making changes. We wanted better and we wanted more!”

According to the release, the result is a modern brake system that utilizes elements of the original equipment in a way that provides better braking and easier installation makes installation easier. MPB said the most significant change was a move from the old caliper to a modern one, as seen on late model Ford applications. It is still a floating caliper, but it mounts on a new cradle that allows it to move more freely and therefore gain efficiency.

The rotor is 11 5/8-inch diameter with options for a plain, slotted, drilled, or a  zinc washed finish. MPB noted that the rotor fits inside most 15-inch wheels but recommends verification prior to ordering. Additionally, the rotor is drilled to accept either a 5 x 5-inch and 5 x 5-½-inch bolt pattern. Center rings are also included to position the rotor on the axle flange for a proper hub-centric installation.

MPB added that the mounting brackets consist of a primary and secondary bracket that is laser cut from steel and then plated for looks and corrosion resistance. As an added bonus, all of the needed hardware and bushings are included in the system.

According to MPB, one of the largest complaints of the old system was the parking brake assembly in the caliper. With the new modern caliper, the parking brake adjusts by a simple pull of the parking brake lever one time. From that point forward, the caliper stays in adjustment by pushing the brake pedal.

“We’ve put a lot of time and thought into the re-design of these kits and we feel the result is an excellent use of modern components blended into a classic application,” MPB stated in the release. They added “the installation is a breeze, and the results are something you will notice every time you apply the brakes.”
