To most people, the phrase “Mercury Cyclone” implies some sort of tornado activity on the planet closest to the sun. But to us old school muscle car types, we remember fondly the Mercury Cyclone, a full-size muscle machine based on the more-popular Ford Torino. But while the Torino sold better, the Cyclone could be had with several different variants on the “Spoiler” performance package.
Two of these rare Mercury Cyclone Spoilers will go up for auction at Mecum’s Texas event this April, reports Hemmings Auto Blog. And while they might look similar, there are subtle differences that highlight how many variations on a single package Mercury might offer.
In 1969 Mercury introduced the Spoiler packages for the Torino-based Cyclone to celebrate the new aerodynamic features added to their NASCAR competitor. The Spoiler and Spoiler II packages mostly consisted of styling options, though there were distinct differences between the two options. The Spoiler II added an aerodynamic front nose that added about six inches to the length of the car, as well as a more “tucked in” rear bumper.
The Spoiler II could be had as a Dan Gurney Special, with a blue top, blue stripes, a white body and blue interior, or a Carl Yarborough Special, with maroon taking the place of blue. There was also a plain old Spoiler version of the Cyclone that lacked the aero nose, but still could be had as a Gurney or Yarborough Special. Both cars could also be fitted with the 335 horsepower 428 Cobra Jet V8.
These old Mercurys should fetch a pretty penny at the auction block.
