ICON Pistons’ 5.7L Hemi forged piston lineup is expanding for 2014, and a number of different designs were on display at PRI.
Each ICON piston in this Hemi line is forged from premium 2618 alloy that has been formulated and heat-treated to survive in the most demanding racing applications. There are nine part numbers for the 5.7L Hemi lineup that will accommodate crankshaft stroke dimensions from 3.79-inch to 4.05-inch.
Domed and dished pistons are available in a variety of configurations and will provide from 371 cubic inches to 396 cubic inches, depending upon stroke length. Compression ratios up to 13.6:1 are achievable with a 65cc cylinder head, and each piston part number is designed for use with a 6.125-inch aftermarket connecting rod.
The pistons are available in .0015-inch through .040-inch oversizes and are shipped with a 1.5mm/1.5mm/3.0mm ring pack.
The top ring land is .240-inch down from the crown of the piston, providing a substantial amount of surface area to handle boost or nitrous oxide.
Each piston uses an offset pin design that helps to reduce friction, and all pistons are shipped with coated piston skirts for additional friction reduction.
Piston crowns and valve reliefs are CNC-machined, and ICON is particularly proud of the custom CNC machinery used to machine the piston skirts.
Mini grooves are used above the top ring land to help reject heat buildup. An additional accumulator groove is present between the top and second ring lands that provides a reservoir area for gases that pass by the top piston ring.
This reduces pressure between the rings to help eliminate ring flutter and maximize sealing.
