This ’53 Chevy Pickup Proves It Can Haul More Than Just Parts

Although designed as a utilitarian machine for farmers and tradesman that made a living building and doing things, the pickup truck certainly has evolved over the years. Now, you can find examples that have more creature comforts than many farmers ever dreamed they would need. The truck has become just as much a luxurious ride as any car.

They have even been recognized by enthusiasts as great platforms for building hot rods. Take for instance this ’53 Chevy. We first introduced you to the Raybestos give-away vehicle several months ago, and to prove this is not just a pretty face, it was put through the paces at the Goodguys’ West Coast Nationals.

The tire-shredding hauler started life as a 3600-series, and is perched atop a Schwartz Performance G-Machine chassis that is fitted with its standard equipment. That includes a triangulated rear four-link that supports a Moser rearend. Up front, you’ll find Schwartz incorporated its own beefy spindles between custom A-arms. A set of extra-long RideTech coilovers all but eliminate the bumps in the road and provide consistent support on the street or track. A power rack-and-pinion is also part of the company’s standard offerings, as are a set of splined sway bars and billet arms at the front and rear.

Jeff Schwartz wheeled the once ubiquitous farm truck to a solid win in the truck class at the event with lap times being competitive with many of the purpose-built cars. That performance was in no doubt, largely due to the G-Machine chassis, BFG Rival-S tires, and Forgeline wheels. The consistent four-piston Raybestos calipers and the power of the Chevy LT1 engine and T56 Magnum transmission might have also played a huge part, but that goes without saying.
