SEMA 2014: Hellion Power Systems Eliminator Will Rock Your 2015

Hellion Power Systems is known for boosting the performance of Mustangs from Fox body to S197, with their kits capable of making incredible power. For the 2014 SEMA show, Hellion founder and front man, John Urist, made sure that the company had their latest system on display for the all of the aftermarket to see. That’s their Eliminator twin turbo system for the 2015 Mustang.

The 2015 Mustang just started hitting the hands of the general public right around the NMRA World Finals. Urist says that he had a car ordered, but it hand’t come in yet. After seeing one of the cars at the NMRA World Finals, he checked with a friend who was able to secure the first ’15 on a small Kentucky Ford dealer’s lot. Urist drove the car back to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he and his Hellion team tore the brand new Mustang completely apart.

With just a few weeks to go until the SEMA show, Urist and his team were scrambling to have a functional car to not only display at SEMA, but to have a working prototype that ’15 Hellion Eliminator kits would be based on. “This kit has two and a half weeks from development to dyno,” says Urist. “We had seen a a 2015, so we started development from an exterior point of view, we had a plan in place, so when this vehicle got to the shop, we found a few things we had to change. Since we do this for a living, we’re able to incorporate everything we’ve learned into the design of this system.”

For the most part this kit is all new parts, carrying over only a few pieces from the ’11-’14 Eliminator kit from Hellion, “Everything is different, the only thing we’ve kept the same is the turbo, the intercooler, and the piping sizes based on what we’ve learned with our previous work with the Coyote and what works with it. Everything else is brand new,” says Urist.

The standard kit will include precision 62mm twin turbos, the kit on display was wearing what will be an optional upgrade to the Precision 64/66 turbos. “ These turbos use V-band inlet technology, that’s ProMod technology on a street turbo, so this is an extremely efficient turbo setup.”

Piping The Sound

The Sound tube that debuted on the S197 chassis has seen no shortage of controversy. Plumbing engine noise into the cabin to still supply owners with some engine sounds. Most power adders eliminate this tube, and in the past that has included Hellion. “For the first time we’ve retained the factory sound tube. So you can get the sound from the turbocharger inside the car.” The tube plugs into the driver side turbo air filter, sending inlet turbo noise straight into the cabin. So if you like the sound those hair dryers make, you’re sure to hear it. If you’d prefer a quieter experience, you can remove the tube.

The turbos feed boost through 2 1/2-inch pipes to the air to air intercooler that also incorporates the MAF sensor. The boosted and cooled charge air is sent to the throttle body via a 3 1/2-inch pipe. All of the tubing is stainless. The hot side of the turbo system uses stainless 2-inch downpipes that on this car feed into 2 1/2-inch pipes and eventually step up into a 3-inch Bassani exhaust system. Urist says that production versions will step from 2-inch to 3-inch without that 2 1/2-inch step.

Controlling the boost from those twin haridryers will be Turbosmart VeePort Pro BOV’s and Compgate 40mm wastegates. This is the kind of high end hardware we’ve come to expect from Hellion, and if you add one of Turbosmart’s EBoost2 controller’s you’re all set for total control of the boost at a touch of your finger tips.

The ’15 Eliminator system also differs from past Hellion systems in a number of other areas. For example according to Urist there are no external parts required from other vendors to get the system installed. “Everything will be included in the kit,” says Urist. In the past Hellion has shipped K-members on applications where needed, or as an upgrade option. He says on the ’15 an aftermarket K-member is not required. Just like previous Hellion kits, there’s also no cutting or welding, so the car can be returned to stock should you want to someday do that to sell the car, or transfer the parts to a different car.

We had seen a a 2015, so we started development from an exterior point of view, we had a plan in place, so when this vehicle got to the shop, we found a few things we had to change. Since we do this for a living, we’re able to incorporate everything we’ve learned into the design of this system.

When Urist showed off the Eliminator kit for the Coyote a few years back, the Hellion team had installed an Aluminator engine in order to handle the boost. With the upgrades to the ’15 engine, that include the same connecting rod design as the previous BOSS 302, Urist says such a swap wasn’t necessary. “This engine has strength from the factory, so we’re taking advantage of that. It’s the bone stock engine, with JMS PowerMax fuel pump voltage booster, Hellion Eliminator kit, 42 lbs injectors and Bassani exhaust.”

The injectors are sourced from the ’13-’14 GT500, and Urist says options will be available for larger injectors depending on how hard the customer will push the boost. A Turbosmart EBoost2 boost controller is likely to be an option as well, and was installed on this car. Urist says it allows them to push a button and up the boost for the base of 7psi all the way up to the current 12-14 psi that the car is running in this trim.

Blow By Racing, tuned the car over the phone, and had it dialed in a just a couple of pulls on the dyno according to Urist. “There were some questions as to the difficulty of tuning the new car, with new software, you always look for hiccups, but we had zero issues,” Urist said.

When it was all said and done, the car produced an impressive 750 hp to the rear tires on the chassis dyno. Urist and crew made a quick trip down the interstate to load the car up on a trailer and send it to SEMA. “It retains excellent drivability, you don’t realize that much power is on tap until you put your foot in it.” The system is capable of delivering over 1,200 hp if the engine internals can take the pressure.

Urist says that the 2015 Eliminator kit should be available right after the first of the year, and Hellion is already taking preorders. It’s an impressive and clean application for the S550, and should be something that hurts the feelings of a lot of brand X stop light and drag strip challengers, as most Hellion equipped cars usually do.
