As you may know, a 383 is a 350 SBC V8 that has been modified to give it a greater cubic inch displacement. This is done by modifying the engine enough to accept a crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons from a 400, as well as boring it .030 over, the effect of which increases the displacement and makes it possible to extract more power from the typical 350.

Adding to the popularity of the 383 is the relative ubiquity of the 350 SBC. First found in in the 1967 Camaro as the L-48, the 350 SBC went on through multiple iterations in the GM lineup, ranging from the C3 Corvette to 1990s Caprice (and even a few Hummers).
