TBT: SPAL’s 14-Inch Brushless Fan Debuts At The 2019 PRI Show

Throw Back Thursdays are designed to remember a milestone or commemorate a highlight in time. Today we opted to remember last year’s PRI Tradeshow when Spal Automotive debuted its new 14-Inch Brushless fan.

We don’t need to explain why engine cooling is important. Globally, everyone already knows that a street engine that runs cooler has a longer lifespan and generally better performance. What we should explain to the RestoMod fans is the importance of having a cooling system that is compatible with larger engine displacements of today.

With LS swaps being as frequent as they are these days, it is common to see a 525 horsepower LS3 in an early 70s Pony car. Shoe-horning an LS engine into a Camaro or Firebird where a straight-six used to live is a chore. After fitting in a decent sized radiator, there is little room for a cooling fan of any real substance. This is where SPAL excels.

Let’s assume the project requires electric fans, a shroud, wiring harness, relay, air conditioning condenser, and perhaps an automatic transmission cooler to finish the project. The choice in cooling fans is limited, and so is the amount of CRM that can be produced by the fan.

Of the many solutions that SPAL offers for this type of situation is the 14-Inch Brushless fan, the company debuted last year. Brushless fans offer a great solution to anyone that is looking for higher fan efficiency.

Features And Benefits

In addition to reduced friction that is inherent in the brushless fan design, the removal of brushes also features these benefits:

Longer life. SPAL claims brushless fans last two to three times longer than brushed motors.

Maintenance-free. With no carbon brushes to change out, there is no maintenance to be performed.

Cleaner. No brushes mean no dust residue.

Quieter. The frictional noise and electric sound created by brushed motors are eliminated.

Spark free. Without brushes, there is no arcing and less radio interference.

Energy-saving. With no brush friction, the motor consumes 28-percent less energy than brushed motors with the same or better output.

Additional Benefits:

All these features and benefits associated with the brushless motors contribute to longer alternator life, longer belt life, less maintenance downtime, small and lighter motor, and high reliability.

While SPAL offers a great variety of brushless fans (12-16- and 17-inch diameter), we were so impressed with last year’s compact 14-inch brushless fan that was capable of pushing 2,400 CFM from a single fan.
