The RACE Mopar Gate-Way Combines Holley EFI With Factory Electronics

The RACE Mopar Gate-Way Combines Holley EFI With Factory Electronics

We live in an amazing time for the high-performance automotive aftermarket. Car manufacturers are producing vehicles capable of horsepower levels unheard of from OEM engines just ten and twenty years ago. Innovation and advancements in tuning capabilities have contributed greatly to the performance we are seeing in modern cars.

One of the most popular platforms to benefit from modern technology is the Dodge Hemi engine found in certain models of Chargers and Challengers, as well as the Jeep Track Hawk. Big 3 Racing of Hinckley, Ohio, has recently launched a new product in collaboration with Rick Anderson Competition Engineering (RACE) Products called the Mopar Gate-Way. This product adds a whole new level of tunability for non-street driving situations, and allows more control for 2015 and newer Charger, Challenger, and Track Hawk vehicles that are equipped with Hemi engines.

Mopar Gate-Way

The RACE Products Mopar Gate-Way is a module that allows a Holley ECU to function with all of the factory electronics.

The RACE Mopar Gate-Way is a true plug-and-play system that allows the use of Holley EFI ECUs while retaining the functionality and features of the factory dash and electronic accessories. The Gate-Way is installed in the vehicle using the OEM connectors that are normally plugged into the factory ECU. Once its wideband O2 sensor and power leads are connected, the Gate-Way is ready to work with either the Holley Terminator X Max or Dominator ECUs. There is no need for any custom wiring, so installing the Gate-Way module and harness is a simple two to three-hour process. Big 3 Racing’s Co-Owner and tuning expert, Rick Trunkett, had this to say, “Using the RACE Products Gate-Way we were able to add several features that are not available through any other form of OEM ECU or the Holley ECU by itself.”

Mopar Gate-Way

Developed in collaboration with Big 3 Racing, the RACE Mopar Gate-Way module includes features and functions not available through an OEM ECU or a Holley stand-alone ECU.

In addition to the Mopar Gate-Way, you will need either a standard Power Harness or extended-length harness, coil drivers, and wide band sensor to work with the Holley ECUs. If you’re using a Holley Dominator ECU, the camshaft must be locked. For cars using the Terminator X Max ECU, the USB/CAN cable must be purchased to connect to the ECU. A CAN Input/Output module can be added to the Terminator X Max system for eight additional I/Os. The use of the optional CAN I/O module adds flex fuel control (when combined with a flex fuel sensor), and boost control.

A feature that is unique to the Gate-Way and not currently offered with other ECU platforms is a cool-down mode. We know that some of the Mopar specialty vehicles—the Redeye for example— have a cool-down feature, but not all Hemi-equipped Mopar cars come with it. With the Gate-Way installed, the cruise control cancel button on the steering wheel is repurposed to activate a cool-down mode when the button and the brake pedal are pressed at the same time. Once activated, the cool-down function will run the fans and intercooler pump for a preset amount of time that you enter during the setup of the Gate-Way. There is also a built-in fail-safe that deactivates the cool-down mode if the battery voltage is too low.

The Gate-Way Holley ECU system utilizes a wideband O2 sensor for precise tuning control.

The guys at Big 3 Racing also incorporated a unique traction control strategy that is only available for the Mopar vehicles by using the RACE Gate-Way with a Holley ECU. The traction control function pulls tire slip data from the car’s factory ABS module to sense when there is a loss of traction. The Gate-Way traction control function uses a timing table in the Holley EFI software to pull timing when there is a loss of traction.

We think this [traction control] feature is going to be a game changer for customers that roll race and drag race their Mopar cars on street tires. — Rick Trunkett, Co-Owner Big 3 Racing

Additional features in the RACE Mopar Gate-Way are a fully adjustable two-step launch control. This is activated by holding the cruise control resume button and the brake pedal. There is also a boost control function that utilizes the car’s factory supercharger bypass system. This function works particularly well when combined with the flex fuel control that is possible with the Gate-Way. These two features allow the user to custom-tune the amount of boost based on the ethanol content in the fuel.

Big 3 Racing is selling, installing, and tuning the RACE Products Gate-Way module and Holley ECU package with fantastic results. This customer's Challenger is highly-modified with turbochargers and a big cam. With the Mopar Gate-Way, a Holley ECU, and Rick Trunkett handling tuning duties, this 2015 Scat Pack Challenger makes almost 1,300 wheel horsepower.

The RACE Mopar Gate-Way is a ground-breaking system. It gives enthusiasts the best of both worlds by allowing complete tuning control of their highly modified Mopar cars using a Holley EFI stand-alone ECU, while still enjoying all of the factory electronic features.
