This Vs. That: 1927 Twin-Turbo Dodge Truck Takes On Boosted Z06

If it’s one thing we love seeing, it’s a couple of cars that are completely different going head to head in a competitive side-by-side drag race. What makes it even more exciting is when both vehicles are running a similar powerplant. And in the case of the Hoonigan Channel’s This Vs. That episode, both of these monsters happen to have turbocharged LS engines with two-speed Powerglide transmissions. And though the powertrains between the two radical hotrods are similar, these vehicles could not be more different.

Darden brought a heavily modified 2006 Chevrolet Z06 to take on 1927 Dodge Brothers hotrod built by Corey at The Lunch Money Garage. As you can imagine, the C6 Corvette has all of the modern amenities like a luxurious interior with leather seats, electronics, and something called aerodynamics. The ’27 Dodge, on the other hand, has none of these creature comforts and is more of a full-on race truck. Its interior has a more industrial feel with a metal interior, custom fab work, and racing seats to boot. Another notable difference is the trucks had controls that allow Corey to drive this wickedly fast machine.

The 2006 Corvette is powered by a twin-turbo 427 cubic-inch LSX that is said to make 1.200 horsepower and weighs in at a hefty 3,400-pounds. The truck makes just 600 horsepower on low boost with its 388-cubic inch twin-turbo LS. Another noticeable difference is the 700-pound weight advantage of the Dodge since it comes in at a much lighter 2,700-pounds. Tire size will also play a massive role in this non-prepped race. The ‘Vette is equipped with a set of Hoosier 28×10.5×15 slicks, and the Lunch Money Dodge utilizes 30x12x15 Mickey Thompson ET Street R Drag Radials.

The race format would go as followed. The two vehicles would line up and race heads up to the 1,000-foot mark for the best of two out of three. And while most of the Hoonigan guys had their money on the truck, it was anyone’s guess on how this drag race would turn out, especially after hearing and seeing the Z06’s burnout. However, after the arms dropped, Darden had his hands full behind the Corvette’s steering wheel as the small tires begged for mercy. The Z06 laid black marks as far as you can see with a giant plume of smoke following the car. Lunch Money had zero problems and took the first-round win effortlessly.

The second race was much closer than the first, with the truck taking the win by what looked like two car lengths. And while the Z06 got off the line without blowing the tires off, traction issues struck at the half-track as the ‘Vette started hazing the tires again. This race secured Lunch Money as the winner of the This Vs. That challenge, but the Hoonigans weren’t done yet and wanted to give the Z06 one more try against the truck.

The third and final race looked as though it was going to be much closer than the second. Both vehicles left neck and neck until Darden said he hit “power reduce mode” from hitting the rev-limiter too much due to tire spin. This would conclude the This Vs. That Challenge with Lunch Money being a unanimous winner. The story here is the truck had a better combination, and even with less power, managed to defeat the more powerful and modern Z06 Corvette.
