The 2014 edition of Hot Rod Drag Week starts on registration day when people started to get checked in and do a little bit of Test ‘n’ Tune so they can shakedown their rides. Getting that extra testing in can give critical data that will help keep the car alive during the brutal torture test Drag Week provides. One of those making a hit was reigning Drag Week champion Tom Bailey and his ‘Sick Seconds’ Camaro, ripping off a staggering 6.52 at over 226 MPH.
In 2013 Bailey and his wicked 1969 Camaro laid a savage assault on the Unlimited Class with a 6.83 average for the week. That average was the first time a car has been able to run a string of six-second passes on all five days of Drag Week and live to tell the tale. The Steve Morris Engines powerplant wearing a pair of pair of 94mm turbos boldly went where no street car had gone before, but some wondered was there more?
Earlier this summer, video made the rounds of the Camaro putting down 2,500 horses on a chassis dyno and maxing it out in the process. Estimates of the power put down were in the 2,700 range and the whispers began that Bailey and his ride would smash the record pass of 6.70 laid down at Indy last year. Flash forward today and those whispers became big, loud, shouts as the Sick Second Camaro ripped off the 6.52 and made it look easy in the process. And then turned around on the first day of official competition in Tulsa and went 6.54 to pace the field early.
How low can Bailey go this week? We’re certainly looking forward to finding out.
