Video: 1969 Boss 302 Trans Am Racer Owned By Vic Edelbrock

vicEBack in 1969, Ford Motor Company, Kar Kraft, and Bud Moore Engineering produced six ‘Skunkworks’ Mustangs to compete in the SCCA’s Trans Am series, and this particular ’69 Boss 302 racer is one of only two left in existence and is currently owned by none other than Vic Edelbrock.

The 1960’s were a busy time for factory-backed racers, as the old adage of ‘Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday’ was in full effect, and the Big Three firmly believed that their racing successes would translate into showroom vehicle sales. The car features a wicked Boss302 engine and was in fact the first Skunkworks machine to be created. The Bud Moore Engineering cars were campaigned by the legendary Parnelli Jones and George Follmer, and features a number of unique touches.

boss302The Boss 302 engine was designed by Ford from the 302 cubic-inch Windsor engine block and a set of Cleveland cylinder heads to build a high-revving, strong-foundation engine, created for the express reason of meeting the SCCA’s rules for “production” engines. Back in the day, this particular machine was driven by Follmer, who ended up breaking a wheel and stuffing the car into the pit wall in his last race behind the wheel at Riverside International Raceway in California in 1970.

Edelbrock ended up purchasing the car about twelve years ago, sight-unseen, and took on the task of bringing it back to its former glorious race-day condition. Vintage racecars of the day often ended up stuck in someone’s barn or left out underneath a tarp to rot when the owners got tired of dumping immense sums of money into them, and to see one restored into primo shape like this is a true blast from the past. Which SCCA Trans Am car was your favorite?
