Edmunds’ Inside Line recently took the most basic Challenger to the track for a thrash. Dodge’s version of the “secretary’s car” sports a 3.5-liter V-6, which likely precluded inviting Tony Pedregon to the test session. Although the overall performance numbers are not stratospheric, the V6’s 250 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque does yeoman’s duty in hauling the 3800 lb Dodge around the tarmac.
With a 0-60 mph time of 8-seconds and 1/4-mile specs of 15.9 at 88.2 mph, SE drivers can confidently expect not to be saddled with incessant challenges from the local police force. Yet, forced through 60-0 braking tests and the track’s slalom circuit, it is evident that the SE handles transient and panic maneuvers with grace.
The 2010 Challenger SE comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission and 17 city/25 hwy EPA mileage ratings. The base 17×7-inch aluminum wheels and P215/65R17 Goodyear all-season tires are most likely responsible for the 0.79 G skidpad rating. Optional 18×7.5-inch aluminum wheels shod with P225/60R18 Continental Touring tires would doubtless make a significant improvement.
While it is popular among performance enthusiasts to sneer at the lesser models in a given line, the fact remains that those daily drivers are what largely support the economic viability of the nameplate. Throw in a bonus for lower insurance costs and eliminate the compulsive need to avoid nasty weather, and what remains is an enjoyable driving experience any day of the year.
