Video: A 3D Printer Is Used To Print A Musclecar

jetsonsTechnology has many of us simply amazed. When we were kids, the Jetson’s were supposed to be our (somewhat humorous) look into the future, with the primary mode of transportation being those flying cars that looked more like a snow dome than a car. But technology has taken us in different areas that the Jetson’s never dreamed of: it’s given us the wonderful world of 3D printers.

Screen Shot 2013-06-12 at 2.52.05 PMNot long ago in the media, the topic of 3D printers came up and at first they were printing tools that could be used to fix something. Recently, the topic was that someone printed a 3D gun, with the exception being that the firing pin couldn’t be duplicated without reverting to a metal pin. Otherwise, it was supposedly a working gun.

It just figures that with this technology someone would try to take advantage of it and cast a negative light on the concept. Sometimes, opportunity needs to stop knocking on the wrong doors. Use this new technology for good, not for trouble, right?

But we found another cool use of 3D printers on YouTube recently, and this time we think it’s kind of cool, albeit very basic and lacking the detail of the aforementioned tools and guns. What first caught our eye was the title that read “Time Lapse Thursday: Muscle Car.”

Screen Shot 2013-06-12 at 2.52.37 PMUsing a Cubify 3D printer, the topic is musclecars, not weapons or tools. Through the wonder of time-lapse videography, we see a three-dimensional Mustang being ‘printed’ before our very eyes.

While the idea of printing a musclecar on a 3D printer is purely entertainment and lacks any function, it does make you wonder what you could do next. How many people would love to print their own car in 3D and place it on their desk? How about printing your engine block, or perhaps some other automotive component?

These printers are remarkably affordable, too. When you consider that the first CD burner was about $800 back in the late 1990s, shelling out $1,300 for your own 3D printer isn’t such a bad deal. We can already see a bunch of cars we’d like to print. What car or truck would you print first if you bought one of these?
