Video: Brian Hobaugh and His Rebel Camaro Take on Goodguys Autocross

There are some slick cars being built and then there are the breed of slick and unforgettable cars, and Brian Hobaugh’s ‘73 Camaro definitely falls into the later category. I’m not just saying that because I’m an F-body fan or because we dove head-first into the build details of the car last month, either. It’s because Hobaugh’s car is a work of art as well a fierce competitor in SCCA and autocross competitions. See for yourself in the video above.

Last month we contacted Hobaugh to get the skinny on his autocross Camaro, and to say we were astonished by the amount of custom work that went into this beast is an understatement. Not that the 416ci LS3 SS Mast Motorsports Engine and Gforce 4-speed GF4A transmission are anything to take lightly, but it’s all the custom work that really makes this car unique.

Aside from customizations to the body, which give the car its seemingly stock look for a car with far from stock components, the Camaro features a custom chassis setup from Maier racing. A Ford 9-inch with Detroit Locker, custom 3-link suspension and Competition Gears 3rd member out back, along with a modified stock sub frame, Maier custom upper and lower control arms, and spindles up front allow Hobaugh’s Camaro to handle like a dream on the autocross course. Not that this comes as a surprise, since the Camaro’s (and Hobaugh’s) skills are blatantly obvious in the video.

Keeping the Camaro planted are 19x 11.5-inch front and 18 x 12-inch rear wheels from Dynamic Performance Engineering wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber.

With his impressive Camaro, Hobaugh has competed in many events, the latest of which was the Goodguys 19th Summer Get-Together in Pleasanton, California where this video was shot. Hobaugh took first place in the Street Machine class of the Goodguys AutoCross with a time of 29.258 seconds, winning him PRO class status.

Had Hobaugh competed in PRO at the event, he would have finished second to good friend and chassis designer Mike Maier, who completed the course in 29.044 seconds in his ‘66 Ford Mustang.

It was an absolute thrill to be able to talk to Hobaugh about his sick Camaro and we can’t wait to see him out thrashing the car at more events this summer.
