Since the beginning of time there hasn’t been a more perfect combo than cars and songs. They go together wonderfully much like chocolate and peanut butter, hot sauce and tacos and Jose Canseco and steroids. To celebrate this wonderful combo our friends at Summit Racing’s On All Cylinders has recently compiled a list of their favorite car songs.
Their list begins with the famous 1960s hit Lowrider by War, which we add is the perfect music to listen to before a night of boosting cars in 60 seconds. Little Deuce Coupe by California’s favorite quartet the Beach Boys is also on the list, as is the horror hot rod jam Dragula by metalhead Rob Zombie. Also on their list is 60’s RnB classic Mustang Sally.
Another favorite that made the list was the song could be heard playing in every Chevy coupe in the early 60s, 409 by the Beach Boys. Of course Pink Cadillac by the Boss makes the list as well. They also included Princes hit Little Red Corvette which uses Corvettes as a metaphor for fast women or men (we think he swings both ways). And the fun surfing jam about America’s first musclecar the Pontiac GTO by Ronnie and the Daytona’s. You can check out On All Cylinder’s Full list here.
While these are great classics, we decided that we would add to the list a few favorites of our own. Some of these are songs that you may remember from your younger years and a few are newer songs about musclecars and American classics that kids of today enjoy. (Don’t worry they are all rock no rap).
First on our list is an old favorite that is arguably the greatest street racing narrative ever penned; Bruce Springsteen’s Racing in the Street. If your a country fan you’ll love Wayne Hancock’s Johnny Law an outlaw guitar pickin’ tune about dealing with the cops when street racing.
Other one of our favorites is the soundtrack to what may be the greatest cinematic portrayal of street racing (aside from Two Lane Blacktop) the Tales From the Crypt episode King of the Road . The episode features to songs by Warren Zevon Bad Road Wretched Road and Roll With the Punches (about street racing in a 57 Chevy). Speaking of Two Lane Blacktop, who better captured the movies plot than Rob Zombie himself in his song Two Lane Blacktop.
The first unknown gem, Devil on the Highway is a bluesy tune that tells the story of driving home hot rod after drinking a case of killers. Who can forget the unforgettable witty horror tale that is Gene Vincent’s Race with the Devil. Arguably the greatest music video of all time featuring plenty of musclecars street racing is the perfect fit for Metallica’s high octane, piston pumping jam Fuel.
For those who lived through the 70s, remember custom vans? Enjoy the van nostalgia with Fu Manchu’s Boogie Van a fuzzy track about cruising in a Chevy van. For those who need a little more speed Fu Manchu has got you covered, enjoy their song drive set to scenes from Dirty Marry Crazy Larry. Another honorably mention is the guitar driven fuzzy track Asphalt Rising about needing a supercharger for your Chevy mill.
The Koffin Kats wrote this horror punkabilly song to teach young rodders an important lesson, never about drag racing the devil for your soul in V8 Nightmare. For your cool rockabilly kats Reverend Horton Heat’s Like A Rocket is one of the best songs to cruise around to a deuce roadster.
For those in an easy listening mood and are feeling nostalgic check out Old White Lincoln by The Gaslight Anthem. For those who are feeling nostalgic and remembering your old car check out 57 Chevy by Roger Holzheimer.
