For many aspiring geaheads, their first foray into wrench turning involves one of the most basic elements of routine vehicle maintenance – the oil change. But Castrol has a new system of oil containment and filtering that might remove the dirty work from this job, and make it an even simpler task than it is now.
The Nexcell system is already in use in the track-only, limited production Aston Martin Vulcan, and if it does well there, we could see the technology rapidly expand out to more common vehicles. Castrol says the entire operation takes just 90 seconds from start to finish, and it eliminates the guesswork involved when taking your car into a shop for the task, as you never really know whether or not they’re using the right oil for your motor.
“We believe this is the biggest leap forward in oil change technology in the history of the combustion engine,” says Paul Waterman, Castrol CEO. “Castrol’s engineers are leaders in their field and have come up with a really innovative piece of technology. It’s the result of almost three years’ work but as soon as people see the benefits in emissions and servicing as well as the substantial environmental benefits, they will ask why it hasn’t been done before.”
Castrol says the Nexcel system has been tested on a range of engines from very small city cars to cutting-edge high-powered racing engines in some seriously extreme of conditions, including on-track braking forces of up to 1.8G. Check out the video above to see the new system in action. Would you want to be able to change your oil this quickly and easily?
