Ever heard of the Dodge Omni Shelby GLH? If not, don’t feel bad. We had a bit of a hard time recalling what this car had anything to do with performance automotives as well. However, with a name like Shelby in its title, it has to be good. After all, Carol Shelby is known for the creation of high-performance American cars. Thanks to our friends over at AutoBlog, we now have the opportunity to reminisce about this unexpected performance car.
The Omni was a small hatchback offered in the 1980s by Dodge. The good thing this car had going for it was its practicality, but its basic looks and performance were nothing to brag about. That was until Chrysler decided to pair with Carol Shelby to create the Omni Shelby GLH. While not the most obvious of performance cars, it came to be known as one of the fastest production cars of its time.
In the Omni Shelby GLH commercial, featured on AutoBlog’s website, the upgrades made to the Omni to create the GLH are depicted in a play-like manner. Appealing to the kid inside all of us and our childhood love of models, the Omni Shelby GLH comes to life first as a child’s toy and then as a powerful performance car.
To create the GLH, the Omni was painted black, equipped with 15-inch wheels, a performance suspension and a “real screamer under the hood”- a high-output Shelby engine. With almost a futuristic feel, the Omni GLH is revealed in the end of the commercial with the saying “No more Mr. nice guy” associated with the performance hatch back.
While it may not be the performance car of your dreams, the GLH was definitely a notable Dodge from the ‘80s. We don’t expect you to run out and try to find yourself one, but maybe now you’ll know what you’re up against if you happen to roll up next to a GLH on the drag strip. After all, legend has it that GLH stands for “Goes Like Hell!”
